Once, someone told the boy that you only get so many laughs in every lifetime so he hoarded them until friends and time ran out.

No one heard the old man chuckle in the end.

Now he hangs out in a Burmese leather shop and waits for strangers to snicker.

Last laugh

Writer’s note: For years, I’ve collected overheard conversations and taken hundreds of photographs that remain a mystery because I didn’t have the time or insight to ask more questions. This WordPress writing challenge to create a story in fifty words inspired me to combine the two and imagine what might have been.

Meet me: Sheilah Bright, a sucker for a story. I've been a journalist for 39 years after first publishing at age 14. Do the math. No, don't. My work has appeared in hundreds of newspapers and magazines. I spent 18 years writing advertising for People and TIME magazine. When I'm not traveling abroad, I bounce along the backroads of Oklahoma searching for some golden story nuggets as a contributing editor for This Land Press and Oklahoma Today.
